Project 12 Portraits | Garage Light

This month we worked on using garage light in our portrait blog circle. Garages are interesting because they tend to be mostly dark, but with one side of full light. This gives you much more dramatic light since it is so directional. And a particularly tricky part, with my garage, anyhow, is that it is a mess. We can’t even fit two cars in there because there is so much STUFF. I backed my car out, and then I moved aside the carpet cleaner and some of Tom’s golf things that were in front of the storage cabinet. I had Emily sit on the floor using the white storage cabinet as the background, and started shooting. I shot at an aperture of 2.8 to keep her face in focus but allow the background to fade to diminish the “garageness” of the setting. And in the first image, I had to clone in some more cabinet into the top right corner, too, to keep the composition I wanted without having a dark blob of golf equipment up there!

For these two, I shot from up a little higher, to just have the cement floor as the background.

And just so you can see how truly lovely our garage is, here’s a pullback!

As always, please continue on in our little circle to see what Laura did this month to capture garage light!

The pullbacks always amaze me! I love how the light is directional, but still soft and flattering, that is always hard for me to pull off:).ReplyCancel

I love that your garage is a mess! So is ours…kinda sucks not having basements in California! Great idea to include the pull back…those are always so fun to see. My favorite one is the last one. Love the color in her cheeks and her thoughfulness.ReplyCancel
